Recruiter's Job Market Signal Economy Change?
Friday, January 18, 2008 at 08:06AM I regularly meet with independent recruiters and ask them about how business is going. I'm especially interested in what the recruiters, that seek recruiters and sales folks for the staffing industry have to say. They are pretty consistent indicators on the health of the IT industry and the economy's direction.
When there is a heavy push and a lot of recruiter's jobs out there, it means there is a heavy glut of requirements from clients and the need for sales folks drop. (Client companies are spending money)
When there is a heavy push for new sales jobs, it means staffing companies don't have enough requirements, either because their current clients are cutting back on budgets or contracts, and the staffing companies are seeking new clients. (client companies are cutting back)
Six months ago, the 75% of the openings were for recruiters and 25% were sales jobs in the staffing industry. In the last few months, there has been a shift to 50% sales and 50% recruiters. It makes sense that this shift in the recruiter/sales mix signals some changes coming. If it continues to 75% sales and 25% recruiters, I think we're in trouble.
I'll keep you posted.
