I started this blog as an open forum for recruiters to exchange their ideas and  feelings to better our profession.  Please feel free to respond to any of my ranting or open up new topics for discussion.  At all times these thoughts must be presented in a professional manner that encourages participation and are a credit to our industry.

I also encourage candidates for employment to ask questions or state problems they have had with recruiters in the past.  Your input is vital to our success.  After all, you need to be just as happy about your new (or future) employment for your continued usage of our services.

I ask you to identify yourself but I will withhold identification posted if requested.

I reserve the right to not post or edit content to adhere to the above standards of conduct.

Am I Selling or Managing the Account?

Answer these questions:

1) Am I on a preferred vendor list that my company was on before I was assigned the account?

2) Do I take the job orders and respond with resume from a VMS or email?

3) Does the client rep I have most contact with, make less then $100K?

4) Do you only accept resumes of 100% fit from the recruiters?

If you answered "yes" you're managing the account

1) Do I actively influence clients to accept my candidates or projects when they were leaning the other way?

2) Do I push back to get higher rates every time I can?

3) Does the client call YOU when he has a question about the industry or technology?

4) Do you know your client's spouses name?

5) Do you know what books are on your best client's desk?

If you ansnwer "yes", you're selling the account

Mike Tiffany has a sweet post on the difference between being given an account and actually selling an account. The difference between a manager and a seller is a different battle than the difference between a hunter and a farmer
