Performance Improvement Plans - What's the message?
Monday, September 10, 2007 at 08:22AM The "published" intention of most Performance Improvement Plans or Probation Plans can be foggy and have multiple meanings.
At some shops, it's a message that, "You are on your way out and need to get looking for a new job" or as a first step to cover the Human Resources department wishes to head off any future lawsuits. But, what we all hope for is a REAL plan on how that recruiter or sales person can have a REAL chance to turn around their performance at stay with the company, if they wish.
With that in mind if the key to the message is The Plan. If you are the manager that must deliver this unfortunate message, do some soul searching yourself and be honest with the employee. If they truly can't make it, tell them. If you want them to remain on board, have clear cut and reachable goals. You need to look at all factors that effect their performance. Everything from your clients, the quality and volume of requirements and make sure your back office supports their success too!
My point is to do your homework, be honest and treat the employee in a way that you would want to be treated yourself.
